Talent Lab Toronto is an intense three-day programme that
gives a group of selected Canadian filmmakers the opportunity to interact and
learn from filmmakers and acclaimed professionals. Talent Lab Toronto features
an exciting roster of workshops, with topics ranging from narrative risk-taking
to creative collaboration to marketing and distribution. Gus Van
Sant joins filmmaker Patricia Rozema, independent producer
Bingham Ray, and internationally acclaimed author Michael
Ondaatje as Talent Lab programme governors. Talent Lab Toronto
includes a variety of discussions such as Story Construction/Editing with Anne
Coates and Dede Allen; The Cinematographer As Artist: Christopher Doyle; The
Director/Producer Relationship with Ted Hope; and the Intimate Rendezvous allows
individual meetings with influential film industry professionals.
Toronto Talent Lab guests include actor/director Kevin Spacey,
Guy Maddin (SISSY BOY SLAP PARTY; SOMBRA DOLOROSA), Peter Mettler (GAMBLING,
GODS AND LSD), Jonathan Caouette (TARNATION), editor Anne Coates (LAWRENCE OF
ARABIA; UNFAITHFUL), cinematographer Christopher Doyle (IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE),
producer Mary Jane Skalski (MYSTERIOUS SKIN), producer Roger Frappier (LA GRANDE
SÉDUCTION), Ziad Doueiri (WEST BEIRUT), editor Dede Allen (WONDER BOYS;

MICHAEL ONDAATJE
WRITER/DIRECTOR
Michael Ondaatje’s books include “The Conversations:
Walter Murch and the Art of Editing Film,” “Anil’s
Ghost,” “The English Patient,” “In the Skin
of a Lion,” “Coming Through Slaughter,” “The
Collected Works of Billy the Kid” and his memoir “Running
in the Family.” His collections of poetry include “Secular
Love,” “The Cinnamon Peeler” and “Handwriting.”
He has made two documentary films: SONS OF CAPTAIN POETRY (70),
on the poet bp Nichol, and THE CLINTON SPECIAL (74), about Theatre
Passe Muraille’s “The Farm Show.”

BINGHAM RAY
PRODUCER
Bingham Ray has nearly twenty-five years of executive experience
in all aspects of the film business. As president of United Artists,
Ray released a number of highly acclaimed films such as the Academy
Award®-winning NO MAN’S LAND (01) and BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE
(02). He previously served as Co-President of October Films, an
independent distribution company he co-founded in 1991 which released
such successful independent films as SECRETS & LIES (96) and
BREAKING THE WAVES (96). Ray began his career in 1980 as programmer
and manager of the Bleecker Street Cinema.

PATRICIA ROZEMA
WRITER/DIRECTOR
In 1987, Patricia Rozema’s debut feature I’VE HEARD
THE MERMAIDS SINGING starring Sheila McCarthy, was selected for
the Director’s Fortnight at the Festival de Cannes and was
awarded the Prix de la Jeunesse. The film received both enormous
commercial and critical success and was recently selected as one
of the top ten Canadian films of the century. Her following two
feature films were the dark and ambitious WHITE ROOM (91) and the
lesbian love story WHEN NIGHT IS FALLING (95). In 1999, Rozema completed
MANSFIELD PARK, an adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel.

GUS VAN SANT
WRITER/DIRECTOR
Gus Van Sant is one of independent film’s most influential
voices. MALA NOCHE (86), his debut feature, gained much critical
praise; his follow-up DRUGSTORE COWBOY (89) won Best Picture and
Best Director citations from the National Society of Film Critics.
As a director, Van Sant’s films include MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO
(91), TO DIE FOR (95), GOOD WILL HUNTING (97), FINDING FORRESTER
(00), GERRY (02) and the Palme d’Or-winning ELEPHANT (03).
He is also the executive producer of KIDS (95) and TARNATION (04).
He lives in Portland, Oregon.
