Bruce Macaulay was born in Quebec City and raised and educated in Montreal. He began working for the Montreal Gazette in 1968 and was soon transferred to Southam Press’ head office in Toronto. He worked in advertising for Southam’s magazine TV/Times from 1972 to 1978 and then as photo editor there until 1983 when he began his freelance career. He has been working in still and gallery photography on film and TV sets since 1984 and has worked on more than two hundred feature films, M.O.W.’s and television shows.

A still photographer since 1995, Sophie Giraud was born in France and brought up in Istanbul. She came to Canada to attend the University of Toronto, obtaining an Honours B.A. in Celtic and film studies. She started a career in live concert photography for various publications in 1992 and moved into film from there. She has worked on more than fifty features, several of which were previous Festival selections, such as CUBE (97), CLUTCH (98), FOCUS (01), RHINOCEROS EYES (03) and TWIST (03). She has also worked on numerous studio pictures such as MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING (02).

In the last five years Peter Stranks has focused his camera on the film industry, producing still photography for many film and TV series, including DARKMAN 2 (94), THE WHOLE NINE YARDS (00), “The Hoop Life” and “Twice in a Lifetime.” Stranks’s images of leading celebrity personalities such as Matthew Perry, Natasha Henstridge, James Belushi, Gregory Hines and Melanie Griffith have appeared in magazine articles, posters and promotional material.

Bonnie Voland founded B. Voland International, an international publicity, marketing, sales and co-production consulting company, in 1990. She is currently co-writing “Don’t Sell Yourself Short,” a book about indie publicity, with producer Gabrielle Kelly.

Joining him is Paul Haggis, who will discuss his prolific career as a screenwriter, producer and director of the Festival Special Presentation CRASH (04); Fabrizio Filippo, actor and director of the Short Cuts presentation THE HUMAN KAZOO (04); and Frank E. Flowers – the morning after the world premiere of his Special Presentation HAVEN (04). The session is moderated by producer Robin Cass, celebrating the tenth successful year of Triptych Media Inc.

Paul Haggis was born in London, Ontario, and has been writing, producing and directing television series such as “thirtysomething,” “Due South” and “L.A. Law” since the seventies. He has been the recipient of numerous awards for his work, including two Emmy Awards, six Gemini Awards and the Writers Guild of America’s Valentine Davies award in 2001. CRASH, for which he also co-wrote the screenplay, is his feature directing debut.

Brad Peyton made two short films that garnered him attention and notoriety: FULL (01) and EVELYN, THE CUTEST EVIL DEAD GIRL (02), which he made while attending Norman Jewison’s Canadian Film Centre. Peyton is currently writing the feature-length animated film THE SPIDER AND THE FLY for Playtone and Universal Studios, to be directed by him. His short film A TALE OF BAD LUCK is screening as part of the Short Cuts Canada programme.

She is using a production model different from that of the so-called Fifth and Sixth Generation’s filmmakers in China to establish a new image for Chinese films in the world.

He authored the M.P.A.’s first comprehensive submission to the United States government on worldwide trade problems facing the U.S. film and video industries. He also supervises the activities of a department that gathers market information, identifies and assesses trade barriers, tracks industry trends and coordinates Association campaigns to promote free trade.

Digital Film Group is Canada’s pre-eminent video-to-film company.

Dave Forget brings twenty years of experience in the distribution of mainstream and speciality feature films to his new position at Telefilm Canada. Prior to his arrival in Toronto, Forget worked as a Senior Investment Analyst with Telefilm Canada’s Western Regional office. Before joining Telefilm in 2001, Forget was one of the founders of Vancouver-based Red Sky Entertainment Ltd., where he was responsible for sales, distribution, business affairs and acquisitions for the company. He also managed the Canadian theatrical operations at Twentieth Century Fox.

Neil Campbell has been involved in the motion picture industry for thirty years, dividing his time between exhibition and distribution. Currently he is the COO of Landmark Cinemas, a Western Canada-based exhibition chain. Prior to that position he was with Columbia Pictures and Cineplex Odeon Films. He also sits on the Boards of Directors of the Motion Picture Pioneers, Alberta Motion Picture Industries Association and AMPTA.

Anthony Cianciotta is one of the industry’s leading experts in theatrical distribution and exhibition. From 1999 to 2003, Cianciotta held the position of Senior Vice-President, Film for Cineplex Odeon, a position in which he was responsible for negotiating all film deals for more than eight hundred screens across Canada. Before joining Cineplex, he was president of Red Sky Entertainment, a Vancouver-based theatrical distribution company that he helped to found in 1997. From 1990 to 1997, Cianciotta was Senior Vice-President and General Manager of theatrical distribution for Alliance Releasing, Canada’s industry leader in distribution.

Niv Fichman is a founding partner of Rhombus Media, renowned for producing such award-winning contemporary films as THIRTY-TWO SHORT FILMS ABOUT GLENN GOULD (93), THE RED VIOLIN (98), LAST NIGHT (98) and THE SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD (03) – more than one hundred films in twenty-five years. He co-produced two films in this year’s Festival: Don McKellar’s CHILDSTAR (04) and Olivier Assayas’s CLEAN (04). He is also a filmmaker and board member of the Toronto International Film Festival Group.

In 1987 Kennedy joined the Cineplex Odeon theatre chain as a Film Buyer and in 1990 was promoted to Vice- President Film and Development. In 1996 he assumed the role of Senior Vice-President, Head Film Buyer at Cineplex Odeon Canada, and in 1999 accepted his current position at Famous Players. Kennedy also sits on the Board of Directors of Alliance Atlantis Cinemas.

He is currently advising Rogers Media on developing Focus Ontario into a complete marketing platform for the production sector.

Margo Langford founded CineClix to sell festival films online, through digital download and DVDs. She was eCommerce advisor to IBM, Vice-President & General Counsel to both Stream Intelligent Networks and iSTAR Internet, Chair of the Canadian Internet Association and has worked in broadcasting and government communications. Langford developed copyright law expertise through managing rights litigation for multinational music companies in over twenty countries.

Colin Geddes is a Toronto-based freelance film journalist, curator and consultant for film, television, home video and DVD. He is the programmer of the Festival’s Midnight Madness programme and sits on the advisory committee of the Reel Asian Film Festival. A respected authority on international trends in genre cinema, particularly those in Asia, he has served on the juries of several international fantasy film festivals. He has recently started to represent and book films including AUDITION (00), BUBBA HO-TEP (02) and THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED (03) at cinemas across Canada.

Over the years, Peter Block has held an executive-level position in nearly every aspect of the Company’s business. Under his supervision, the Lions Gate Acquisitions department has acquired distribution rights to over five hundred films. His focus on genre pictures resulted in the Company’s foray into the theatrical release of horror and thriller pictures through the acquisition of CABIN FEVER (02) and HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES (03). He has also been responsible for acquiring films such as Peter Jackson’s DEAD ALIVE (92), Guillermo del Toro’s CRONOS (93), Alexandre Aja’s HAUTE TENSION (03) and the Spierig brothers’ UNDEAD (03).

Born and raised in Cardiff, Wales, Marc Evans was educated at Cambridge and Bristol Universities. His first feature, HOUSE OF AMERICA (97), won acclaim at many international festivals including Sundance. A second feature, the controversial Belfast thriller RESURRECTION MAN (98) followed. Evans’s next film MY LITTLE EYE (02) was a shocking digital-video horror film that was presented as part of Midnight Madness at the Festival in 2002. TRAUMA screens in the Visions programme at this year’s Festival.
 
LIZZIE FRANCKE
HEAD OF MINISTRY OF FEAR, A DIVISION OF LITTLE BIRD

Lizzie Francke began her career as a programmer for the Everyman Cinema and Electric Pictures where she was involved in the re-releases of LA DOLCE VITA (60), BREATHLESS (60), THE BIG HEAT (53) and IN A LONELY PLACE (50), among others. She was also involved in launching the debut films of both Claire Denis (CHOCOLAT (88)) and Jane Campion (SWEETIE (89)). Subsequently she enjoyed a career as a critic writing on film for a variety of publications from “Sight and Sound” to “The Guardian.” She currently works for the production company Little Bird, where she is executive in charge of their Ministry of Fear label.
 
ALEX TURNER
DIRECTOR, DEAD BIRDS (04)

Alex Turner started directing films at age eleven with a home movie camera given to him by his father, resulting in epics like DR. GRIFFIN’S CREATION and SPATULA DEATH. He graduated from the film programme at the State University of New York’s Purchase College and directed music videos and commercials in Los Angeles and New York. He has made two highly acclaimed short films, CHUCK (00) and DISPOSAL (03). DEAD BIRDS is his feature debut.
